Abstract

This internal Lorillard Tobacco Company memo from 1981 introduces Lorillard's estimates of the number of U.S. smokers in eleven different age goups--starting at age 13.

This document was used as a trial exhibit in Minnesota and Washington to demonstrate the industry's interest in child-smokers.

RE: Smoker Incidence by Age Groups

Attached are estimates for the number of smokers within eleven different age groups for total population, males, and females. In computing these estimates, I used Census Bureau proejctions for 1981 population.

Estimates can be computed for the number of smokers at specific ages (rather than age groups) but the weight, or incidence of smokers, for the entire age group will have to be applied. Please let me know if you wish this done. It can be accomplished within a few hours.

MEMORANDUM TO: J. R. Ave FROM: Laurie Moroz RE: Smoker Incidence by Age Groups November 25, 1981 Attached are estimates for the number of smokers within eleven different age groups for total population, males, and females. In computing these estimates, I used Census Bureau projections for 1981 population, Switching Study data, and government studies on smoking among teenagers and among the general population. (The teenage smoking figures are the least reliable, but they are a small part of the total smoking population, and probably consume at a lower rate than adults). Estimates can be computed for the number of smokers at specific ages (rather than age groups) but the weight, or incidence of smokers, for the entire age group will have to be applied.
