Stanford Shook, Hardy, and Bacon Mercantile Bank Tower 1101 Walnut ,Kansas City, Missouri 64106 Dear Lee, Enclosed are several copies of a series of articles on medical ethics, recently published in the ARCHIVES OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. These were solicited by me when I was President of the New England States Chapter of the American, College of Chest Physicians and, through their publication, have led to the tormation of a new Department of Medical Ethics in thi,s journal. This is, I believe, an important area that has beenifar too seriously neglected by my fellow practitioners of the medical profession. Yourcolleagues in your firm, and the lawyers in the tobacco industry companies, may be more- familair with this turf. I hope our initial endeavors, an&the resultant for- mation of this Department in the ARCHIVES, will be a frui~tful first step that will bear more returns. .. It will be my intent to submit to them an editorial on smoking and health, although I am not sure they will publish what I will have to say, as I believe that this subject, like medical ethics, is a topic that the medical and scien- tific community have had for too long their perversive-head buried far too deeply in the sand to believe other than as they now want to, regardless of any facts to the contrary (my friend,_vhe__Gener _aLC.o.u.nsel who lives in an affluent suburb of Now York City, migiit -.wel ._express it that they had their heads buried some- where else`up , or within their own anatomy.) . Anyway, I thought you and Bill Shinn might enjoy this finished product, which could not have been possible without-the help of the Smoking and Health~ Research Program. You may wish to send copies to our friends in the industry. r GLH/kkh Siricerely, Gary L. Huber, M.D., Director Smoking and Health Research Program Enclosure: 25 cc
